In June 2010, the Indiana Department of Workforce Development s job snapshot for northeast Indiana wasn’t pretty. The ten-county areas non-seasonally adjusted jobless rate far exceeded both the national and state rates. Northeast Indiana s rate was 10.8 percent compared to 10.1 percent for the entire state of Indiana and 9.6 percent for the United States.
However, when economic development officials looked at the most recent official numbers -from June 2011- they discovered what appears to be an amazing turnaround. Not only is northeast Indiana’s non-seasonally adjusted jobless rate now lower than those of both the state and country, its way below that of the country. Northeast Indiana’s rate is 8.4 percent while Indiana’s is 8.5 percent and the U.S.s is 9.3 percent.
